The Communication of Energies

Through this work, Sunando has discovered that art itself is a medium of healing. Each piece channels energy that can calm, realign, or awaken clarity in those who engage with it. By blending his understanding of human energy with artistic expression, he creates works that communicate silently but profoundly, offering a sense of balance and resonance to spaces and individuals alike.

Sunando Basu:
Evolution of Art into Energism

Manas Kamal.jpg

For over 25 years, Sunando Basu has painted with quiet devotion, continuously experimenting with techniques, perspectives, textures, and forms. What began as a pursuit of visual expression gradually evolved into something far more profound. Through years of practice and inner inquiry, he came to realise that his art was not merely created by the hand, but guided by an unseen current. Each canvas became a space of dialogue with subtle forces—an exploration of energy, emotion, memory, and consciousness itself.

As time unfolded, his work revealed patterns beyond aesthetics, reflecting the rhythms of life and the invisible threads that shape human experience. Every series emerged as a milestone in this journey, carrying its own intention, vibration, and message. These explorations ultimately led to the emergence of Energism—a philosophy and practice where art transcends form to become a living channel for energy, intuition, transformation, and healing, inviting the viewer not just to see, but to feel and awaken.

Journey Series

Coming to Delhi with little money, I found myself in a city where survival meant building everything from the ground up. Going back home wasn’t an option, so I embraced the struggle, navigating each day with a quiet determination. From the comfort of a familiar world, I stepped into uncertainty—there were days when even a meal was a luxury. Yet, it was my perspective that shaped my journey. Seeing my hardships not as limitations but as part of a greater process gave me the strength to persist. This series became a testament to that resilience, capturing the raw emotions of survival, adaptation, and self-belief. It was through these paintings that I reaffirmed my ability to transform challenges into creative expression and to find meaning even in moments of despair.

As I worked on these paintings in preparation for an exhibition, the theme wasn’t clear at first. But as I immersed myself in the process, I realised that my journey—its struggles, survival, and growth—was the most fitting subject. The works in this series are deeply layered, both in texture and meaning. Each painting is divided into three sections, symbolising the past, present, and future. This segmentation was more than a visual structure—it reflected the evolution of thought and experience, a continuous yet fragmented narrative. The styles within each section varied—some parts leaned toward realism, others towards abstraction, while some took on a more representational form. Much like life itself, where different phases coexist yet flow into one another, these works capture that interplay. Looking back, I see that all my art, knowingly or unknowingly, has been a reflection of my journey. In this series, that connection became intentional, a conscious exploration of existence. Perhaps this is why people connect with these paintings—because, in the end, every journey, whether in life or art, is about discovering oneself.

Brahma Series

This series has been created over a while, yet each piece is unified by a consistent emotional and philosophical essence. Unlike traditional narrative paintings, there is no singular story or subject; rather, the entire body of work functions as a meditation on Brahma—the ultimate reality that transcends definition. These paintings are neither purely accidental nor strictly controlled; they exist in the liminal space where intuition and technique converge.

Through this ongoing artistic process, I seek to explore the paradox of form and formlessness—how the infinite can be suggested through colour, how the unseen can be felt through texture, and how meaning can emerge from abstraction. My art is not about depicting the material world but about channelling an experience—an internal, spiritual, and philosophical dialogue translated onto canvas. In essence, it is a visual hymn to Brahma, the omnipresent force that both defines and defies existence.

Soliloquy Series

Just as a soliloquy gives voice to unfiltered thoughts, my brushstrokes unravel the tension between what is felt and what is seen. Each painting in this series carries its narrative, yet all are connected through a shared emotional undercurrent. Layered textures and evocative imagery create a space where silence speaks, where emotions take form without the need for words. This series is my soliloquy, but I hope it also serves as a mirror, reflecting the viewer’s inner world and inviting them into a silent yet profound conversation with themselves.

In Search of Language Series

In Search of Language is more than a series; it is a meditation on existence, a pursuit of the unspoken, and an artistic translation of life’s unfolding journey. As an artist, I channel my emotional, intellectual, and creative energy into these works, seeking not just to represent but to evoke—to create a space where the viewer can find their meaning in the folds of colour, depth, and abstraction. Life is ever-shifting, and so is the language of art. This series stands as my search for that language, for a way to capture the unseen, the unspoken, and the infinite layers of human experience.

Transition

If my life were broken into phases, the moments in between—those uncertain, shifting spaces—are what I call transitions. These are the times when I have painted works that form my Transition series. While each phase of my life has had its artistic language, the works created during these in-between periods reflect change itself. There may be differences in technique, the emergence of new styles, or evolution in form, but the essence remains the same: these paintings serve as bridges, carrying me from one stage of my journey to the next. They are neither the past nor the future but exist in the delicate balance of becoming.

Energism

Energism is my latest series, a culmination of everything I have learned and unlearned throughout my artistic journey. My art has evolved, moving beyond form and structure into something more instinctive—something felt rather than just seen. Now, I find myself working with energies, with vibrations that flow through me and onto the canvas. These paintings are not just compositions of colour and texture; they are experiences, capturing invisible forces that influence our emotions and states of mind. Layered brushstrokes, shifting hues, and dynamic movements create an almost pulsating effect, as if the artwork itself is alive, radiating energy outward. This series represents a turning point—a sense of nearing completion, of finding a language that transcends the visual and touches something deeper.
